Our Speaker

Ruth Payne Umbel is a 10th generation Virginian whose Payne ancestors came from Bristol, England and settled in Virginia’s Northern Neck in 1642; later ancestors moved to the Fauquier County area in the 1700s. Ruth is proud of her Fauquier roots and ties.

She worked in middle school education for 42 years; 32 of them at WC Taylor Middle School in Warrenton where she was the longest serving principal in the school’s history. Currently, Ruth is serving in her 44th year as organist and choir director at Marshall United Methodist Church.

Working with Fauquier FISH in the Weekend Power Pack Program helping to assist students with needed food for weekends and holidays is a true joy and blessing which she and her husband Rich share.

Additionally, Ruth has served on the Board of Directors of Fauquier Heritage and Preservation Foundation for 21 years as secretary and works as a volunteer at the John K Gott Library.

Ruth earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree (James Madison), a Master of Education degree in School Administration (George Mason), and a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction (George Mason). She sings with the Piedmont singers and has had the privilege of singing in the National Cathedral as well as in choral residencies in England at Oxford and in York. Our next residency will be in Wells in 2024. Hobbies include knitting, quilting, traveling, reading voraciously, spending time with family and friends, and tending our yard and flowers.

(Other current affiliations include Alpha Delta Kappa, Fauquier #332 Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Fauquier Retired Teachers Association, serving on the Marshall Community Center advisory committee, secretary of the Marshall United Methodist Preschool Board, and a member of the Master Gardeners Association of Fauquier and Rappahannock Counties.)
